Profile: global-mercator
This is a whole-earth geospatial profile suitable for use with spherical Mercator datasets. Most online mapping services like Google maps, Yahoo! maps, etc. use a spherical Mercator projection to optimize proportionality in 2D maps. In 3D, spherical Mercator also nicely preserves label proportions as you move towards the poles.
The downside to spherical Mercator is that it only extend to approximately 85 degrees north and south latitude, not reaching all the way to the poles.
